Last month, we were delighted to discover we were the successful bidders of Derek Eland’s painting “We are Carlisle” at the Love Cumbria Art Auction. The piece had originally been commissioned by the CN Group for Carlisle Living’s February issue that detailed the devastating floods caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015 and how the city was recovering. The work has come to symbolise the spirit of Carlisle over the last few months. Both what it has endured and it’s future; pushing and rising upwards. It is a piece that showcases the city’s community, vibrancy and positivity for the future.
The auction itself was a response by the vibrant artistic community that thrives in the city to the floods in support of those who had been affected. In itself the event became a showcase of all that the city has to offer both in print, painting, sculpture, music, poetry and performance.
Derek’s “We are Carlisle” was one of the most sought after pieces, both in the lead up to the auction, and on the night. We have worked with Derek to turn his work into a limited edition print with all the proceeds from their sale going to the Cumbria Community Fund Flood Appeal.
With Derek leaving shortly to take his place as Artist-in-residence on Everest, his work is attracting a great deal of national, and international, interest. The prints offer a fantastic opportunity to own not just a stunning visual image by a sought after artist, but one that encapsulates the spirit of Carlisle at this time as well as providing financial support to those who have been hit worst.
100 numbered, signed and mounted giclee prints and 5 signed and numbered artist proofs are available for £100 and £150 respectively. They can be pre-ordered now from Warwick Mill Business Centre on 01228 564400 or by firstname.lastname@example.org. They will be available for collection or postal delivery (at cost) from March 11th. Any remaining prints will be available for sale via the Mill and Castle Street Framing in Brampton and Carlisle.
With strong interest already from private and corporate buyers we hope to raise £9,000 for the Flood Appeal. We hope you can support us.
